rotifer body forms and shapes

Bauplan

...diversity of body shapes

The diverse shapes of the rotifer body can be generally characterized by a cylindrical or spherical form. The body can be divided into head, trunk and foot.

  • The head bears a ciliated crown or corona that gives rotifers their name and is used for locomotion and feeding. There are endless variations of the corona form and its patterns. In most rotifers, the corona drives fine, particulate food into the mouth. The head region has tactile and optic sense organs as well as the oral aperture or mouth.
  • The cavity of the body trunk bears a glandular stomach where food is digested, a short intestine which leads to the subterminal anus. The body cavity bears a pair of nephridial tubules draining a series of flame cells that lead to a bladder that discharges to the exterior. The nervous system includes a bi-lobed ganglion and complex sense-organs (i.e. tactile, chemoreceptory).
  • The shape of the foot also varies widely, probably in relation to rotifer lifestyle. It bears an organ of attachment in the shape of toes, a disc, or a ciliated cup. The foot aids in locomotion, as the creeping foot in bdelloids or the swimming foot with broad toes in the genus Cephalodella.
